Re-Imagining Treasures of Hyde Abbey
‘Re-Imagining Treasures of Hyde Abbey’ (March 6 – April 18, 2010) was the contemporary art component of a larger lottery-funded exhibition being hosted in Winchester, UK. ‘Re-Imagining’ was held at three spaces across the city: Link Gallery, City Space Gallery, and Winchester Cathedral. The selected artists were asked to produce works in response to the history of Winchester—the original capital of England.
My work, ‘Apotheosis’ appropriates imagery from local and international sources, reflecting the wide range of influences (especially Roman, Saxon, Norman and Scandinavian) which helped to shape the city of Winchester. The work is comprised of two identical boxes, both from IKEA Southampton. The first box has remained in its original form – reminiscent of the chair it once contained. The second box has been unfolded and positioned flat against the wall, completing the effect of an altarpiece and pew.
‘Apotheosis’ was kindly sponsored by IKEA Southampton.
